Sanding Paper – The Classic and Reliable Tool for Smoothing

This is an absolute essential for every workshop. Sanding paper in sheets is the most versatile and universal material for manual smoothing, shaping, and final surface preparation. From aggressive material removal to polishing primers to a mirror finish – having a set of papers with varying grits is key to gaining full control over your project's finish.

Choose the Right Grit for the Job

Sanding paper is a tool whose "sharpness" is defined by its grit. The lower the number, the coarser the grain and the more aggressive the action:

  • Use low grits (e.g., 100-180) for initial shaping of EVA foam and removing deeper imperfections.
  • Reach for medium grits (e.g., 220-320) for general edge smoothing and preparing the surface for the first layer of primer.
  • Select high grits (e.g., 400 and above) for a final, silky-smooth finish on layers of primer. High-grit papers can often be used wet, which provides an even smoother result and reduces dust.

Versatility in Application

A sheet of sanding paper can be used in many ways – held in your hand, wrapped around a sanding block to achieve a perfectly flat surface, or wrapped around a dowel to reach difficult, concave areas. It is a simple, inexpensive, and highly effective tool that no professional project can be completed without. Remember your mask and goggles – your health is the most important thing!
